A measure approved by the U.S. House Thursday would at least temporarily avert a shutdown of the Iowa Air National Guard’s 132nd Fighter Wing in Des Moines.

The bill, which would fund the federal government through March 2013, contains a provision that prohibits the Department of Defense from retiring any Air Force aircraft, said U.S. Rep. Tom Latham, R-Iowa. The provision would include the 21 F-16s based in Des Moines, the congressman added.

The endorsements are the result of a grassroots vetting process that considers candidates’ positions, leadership on Farm Bureau priorities and past voting records.

The government should have more faith in doctors, nurses and other medical professionals to create innovative ways to improve the health-care system, U.S. Rep. Tom Latham said this afternoon.

“Wouldn’t it be great if we could remove politics, micromanagement and bureaucratic decision-making from the equation?” he said. “Let the people who actually take care of Medicare patients come up with a solution.”
